New York - 1940's

Still life, in oil, possibly done while Jance was studying at the Art Student's league.

Evyln Harding - one of many friends and acquaintances caught in my mother's sketchbooks.
Two quick sketches on a small lined pad. Vishnu Bhide on the left apeared in several photographs with my mother and her best friend, Leona Towner Rem. Leona grew up on a farm close to where Janice was raised in East Athens, PA.

Sailors in Central Park....a favorite haunt of my mother.

On her days off Janice would visit and so sketches of soldiers who were in the hospital. This soldier is named Bruce Hairr. Ordinarily she would have given the drawing to the soldier. Perhaps she did two of this fellow.

Teddy. That's all I know about him.

Janice lived on the East side. I believe she rented a room at the Barbizon, which was a residential hotel at that time. This watercolor shows the walk along the East River.

I don't know if this was done for fun or for a commercial assignment. she did two versions. the other one has the caption, "WOW!"

Janice began drawing cartoons at an early age when she made comic strips for her younger brother, Harrison.
After graduation from Syracuse, Janice came to New York City, as her mother had done over twenty years earlier. One of her first jobs was as an artist for the Branford Advertising Agency. These commercial images were likely done while employed there.

I continue to be impressed with your mother's (and grandmother's) talent and hard work. And you've done a wonderful job setting up this site, Angela!
